Dolls house final days

Just a reminder that the Dolls House is only at Hand Held for a few more days.

Due to the Grand Final on Saturday we won't be open - I can't imaging anyone will be in the city with all that hoo-ha going on - so Friday(30th) will be it's last day.

Next up is Light and Lines by Barry Smith and Fiona Dempster which will open Thursday eve 6-8pm.

Inside Out/Outside In - Dolls House Project

The lovely Dolls House Gallery was installed in Hand Held last weekend. Within it was installed the exhibition Inside out/Outside In - an exhibition that questions the notion of inside and outside as being mutually exclusive terms. As Dave Nolan explains in his catalogue essay, each artist approaches the exhibition premise in different ways - Heather Hesterman with her ' beguilingly simple representation of houses within houses', Raquel Osterman with her peek-a-boo tie, Secret Glimpse #1 which not only reflects inside and out but upside and underside, Rebecca Mayo's A Mile and a Half Deep which 'refers us to the complex tangle of past and present' and Richard Hardings The Cottage was at the End of a Tree Line Square which reflects on 'coded forms of communication and comportment'.

Dave's entire essay.

Bright ideas?

Having finally taken the opportunity to have a show in the gallery we installed 'lightbulbs, teabags and post-its' last Thursday eve.

Inspired by post-it note jottings of sudden ideas, thoughts and philosophical musings and the beauty of the discards of idle moments which lead to the occasional 'lightbulb' moment or flash of inspiration.

The Change Exchange

The Change Exchange is Hand Held gallery's first International traveling exhibition.

Curated by the lovely Jenny Bolhofner (who currently resides in Guam) The Change Exchange is the work of 28 US artists.

The exhibition came about when Jenny picked her life and moved it to Guam last year - a massive change in her life that lead her to consider change, cause and effect whether it be sudden and explosive or slow and gentle.

Artist were offered a small card on which to produce a work along with an envelope to write text and thoughts. These works were then returned to Jenny and posted online. Each artist selected the work of another and on receiving that work ... Changed it!

The exhibition is the culmination of this process - the final works as created and changed by two separate artists - it makes fascinating viewing and anyone heading through Melbourne in the next few weeks should stop in.

The exhibition continues till August 13th.

An Ideal Half - Last Week

Come on in for the last week of Camilla Galaz's first solo show.

A show that makes us look at the 'flying rats', that live beside us, in our city environment - despised, unwanted and certainly misunderstood - in a new light.

An Ideal Half runs til Saturday July 25th.
